What is it?
The Acoustic Firmness Sensor (AFS) is innovative technology for on-line non-destructive measurement of firmness and related characteristics. This is done with a combination of acoustic and impact method.
What does it do? How does it work?
There are two technologies that can be used. The acoustic and impact method.
The acoustic method gently touches the product and "listens" to the acoustic response. This way, it measures the vibration pattern of the entire product. This pattern (resonance attenuated vibration) is characteristic for the overall firmness, juice content, freshness and the internal structure of the product the signals are analyzed and translated into a firmness index (FI).
The FI will be high in fresh and juicy fruit and low in soft and ripe fruit.
The impact method gently touches the fruit and determines the surface elasticity. Multiple measurements are made at different locations around the fruit in order to get a firmness value for the entire product. This impact method has a high sensitivity in soft fruit.
How can it help you?
Combining the two technologies in one sensor increases the sensitivity in measuring the complete fruit firmness range, from very soft to very firm.
The grower can guarantee a certain quality of ALL his products. This also means he can qualify his products and release them onto the market upon his convenience.
